Practical Problem Solving (16 hours)


Description

The Problem Solving course will teach students how to solve problems using a formal methodology. Students will learn to execute each step in the problem solving methodology. They will also be given the opportunity to practice integrating these skills into simulated problem scenarios. Managers and employees at all levels of the organization who will be involved in problem solving and improvement activities will benefit from this course.

The course length is 16 hours and will include detailed instruction, periodic assessments, and a certificate of completion upon successful review.

Lesson 1: Introduction to AQI Problem Solving

  • Explain the importance of employing a formal Problem Solving Methodology
  • Introduce the six-step AQI Problem Solving Methodology
  • Introduce students to a rigorous definition of "problems"
  • Identify some of the obstacles that often prevent effective Problem Solving

Lesson 2: Step 1: Identifying and Defining the Problem

  • Recognize and identify problems
  • Effectively describe problems
  • Define the goals for solving a problem
  • Build a business case for solving a problem
  • Use the Problem Solving A3
  • Contain problems and how containment fits into the methodology

Lesson 3: Step 2: Locating the Point of Cause

  • The concept of point of cause and how it differs from other types of cause, such as root cause
  • How to ascertain point of cause and direct cause
  • How to differentiate between causes and symptoms
  • How to handle the social aspects of locating cause

Lesson 4: Step 3: Analyzing the Situation and Driving to the Root Cause

  • The concept of root cause and its importance
  • How to perform root cause analysis
  • How to employ AQI tools to help in root cause analysis
  • How to differentiate between causes and symptoms
  • How to handle the social aspects of locating cause

Lesson 5: Step 4: Identifying Solutions and Planning for Action

  • The cycle of planning, implementing and testing
  • How to generate solutions
  • How to use AQI problem solving tools to support the generation of solutions
  • How to determine the criteria for selecting the best solution among many
  • How to develop a plan for action

Lesson 6: Step 5: Implementing Action Plans and Testing for Their Effectiveness

  • The important ties between implementation and testing
  • How to communicate a plan to build support for its implementation
  • Key concerns in implementation
  • How to verify the effectiveness of a plan

Lesson 7: Step 6: Standardizing Successful Solutions

  • The value of standardization
  • How to create a standard operating procedure, including documentation of your solution
