Fire Behavior in a Single Family Occupancy


Description

This courses uses observation and analysis of fire tests and resultant data to illustrate the value, application and potential limitations of fire test methods, instruments and equipment. Scenarios and case studies enable participants to evaluate fire behavior during the tests and to understand how that data applies to real-life fires. Participants will learn how individual items affect fire behavior. Those variables include fire detection and fire fighting equipment (smoke detectors, CO detectors, sprinklers), and room size and layout (ceiling height, doorways, windows). Analysis and discussion of test results will enable participants to evaluate and interpret those results, and apply them to real-life fires.

Objectives

  • Describe how fires behave in terms of growth (size), spread (movement), rate (heat release) and intensity (temperature).
  • Describe factors that may change a fire from manageable to unmanageable.
  • Describe the purpose; methods, limitations and data generated for small-, intermediate- and full-scale fire tests.
  • Explain the purpose of small-, intermediate- and full-scale test methods.
  • Identify fire test methods and instruments.
  • Interpret data from fire tests and apply data to fire behavior.
  • Describe how sprinklers affect heat.
  • Explain how fire behavior affects strategies to improve firefighter safety.
